In December 2008, I was led through Mulford Gardens one last time. By then, the buildings were cleared of any and all items that might have told some stories of those who lived here last. The rooms had all been stripped and debris was removed. Enough stuff was left behind to fill about 120 large construction dumpsters I was told. Even in the beginning of the 21st century, America's poor have enough disposable income to not worry about leaving behind 120 dumpsters worth of what had once been perfectly usable possessions. But such is our world these days, that just about anything we use in our daily routine is made to be disposable. Perhaps this photo tour would have been more interesting at the beginning of the demolition process, but at least getting in near the end was better than not at all. Here, we have one last look at what for many people was simply, home.

All of Mulford Gardens was demolished by the end of 2009.

Thanks to Peter Byram, of  IMC Consulting, for leading the tour, which was arranged by City Council President Chuck Lesnick.
