Cupola

November 6, 1999

This concrete cupola rests on the famous Lake Ontario rocks below Fort Ontario. Not long after posting this page, I received an email from Richard Cunningham with information regarding the identity of this relic. The cupola is in fact, a "phone booth" from a railroad. These structures held dedicated one way phones to communicate with switch towers. No longer used, you can still find them standing or toppled along many active and abandoned railroad lines.
