Abandoned House
POOLSBURG, NEW YORK

October 15, 2002

I found this house in a small community known as Poolsburg, along the side of Route 9J in the northern Columbia County. It had been little more than month after having purchased my first car. Getting out and driving around is sometimes the only way to find these ruins. Local historians won't think to tell you about the house falling down by the side of the road, and most folks who live nearby probably drive past every day without even noticing. It may not merit landmark designation, but this was someone's home, and I wonder if he or she or their descendants are even aware of what happened to the old homestead. I visited this site in June of 2003, and the house had completely collapsed, joining the adjacent ruins. Judging by the window frames, I'm surprised it lasted that long. Maybe it waited just long enough for me to take its picture.
