Different signs of different times, located directly opposite the Hudson River, (left) on Rt. 9W near Esopus and (right) on US 9 just north of Hyde Park. The juxtaposition struck me as an ironic but vivid illustration of the higher development pressure that continues to claim the rural character of the river's east shore, continuing a trend that began when the Dutch first landed at Manhattan Island in the seventheenth century.
